Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) is one of the most raved about products in the natural hair community. It is unrefined castor oil, originating from Jamaica. It is known for thickening hair, and rescuing some of the saddest looking hairlines and bald patches.
I was introduced to JBCO by a friend who went to the USA and tried it out; I've never looked back! (No exaggeration whatsoever). This product actually works. Much to the extent that I use it to grow my eyebrows and eyelashes-the results are not as immediate but are definitely noticeable over time.
Initially, I would interchange between the Sunny Isle and Tropic Isle brand. The packaging and contents are almost identical so there's no significant difference between the two. I bought the jbco from Blaq Hair Care care at the Hair On Junction event, R250 for 236ml, which is such a bargain price compared to what I've bought it for in the past (R350 and up!)This brand has never let me down. I use it religiously on my scalp so it lasts about 2-3 months. Before I protective style, I combine it with shea butter and use that as my scalp oil (for extra moisture). This mixture helps keep my edges laid! It's got a very gooey and thick consistency on its own, but I protective style for about 2 weeks at a time so my thick 4c hair appreciates this.
I purchased the Mango and Lime brand from Dischem for R79.99, 118ml glass bottle. At first, I was a bit apprehensive about it-the thought of putting lemon on my hair didn't sit well with me. I bought the extra dark version... but it seems to be the same color as my normal Tropic Isle oil. I sometimes use this jbco in my leave in conditioner. I stick to low dosages as I'm skeptical. I've watched Youtubers complain about their hair shedding because of this product. No thank you!
I stumbled upon the Bazilio brand through a Facebook group for naturals, Jozi 4c. It's R80 for 125ml. It isn't as thick as the Tropic Isle brand and has a slightly lighter color. I appreciated that it's in a transparent bottle so you can be conscious of how much you're using as opposed to the other 2 brands that come in dark jars. When applied onto my scalp, it felt light so I use this as part of my deep conditioner. It will really enhance the smoothness (slip) of any regular conditioner. I also use it on my eyelashes on a daily basis (at night only).
Overall, I think my loyalties lie when the Tropic Isle brand. At first glance it seems pricey, but it works out to be R125 for 118ml which compares well with the other brands. I will still buy the other brands, most probably the Bazilio brand, and incorporate it into my deep conditioner. Regular castor oil doesn't work as well for me. I say this because my hair regime hasn't changed much since I last used regular castor oil so I can only attribute the improvement in my hair health to the new products I've introduced.
Unrefined and organic products surely does wonders to your hair!
